Description
1670 1ed Works of OVID Heroides Mythology Epistolae Heroines Heinsius Commentary
“I grabbed a pile of dust, and holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I forgot to ask that they be years of youth.”
― Ovid, Metamorphoses
This first Hackiana edition of the works of Ovid is very rare! This printing includes notes and commentary of Nicolas Heinsius, and according to Brunet,
“this edition’s notes are more numerous and better chosen than that of the previous edition. [i.e. Schrevelio, 1661]”
Further still, Graesse says of the commentary in this edition:
“The publisher has made a fairly reasonable choice of the commentaries of the various commentators.”
This volume includes Ovid’s famous ‘Letters of Heroines’, or ‘Heroides’ – a rare work of Roman mythology in which heroines long for their heroic lovers by whom they had been mistreated.
