Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a framed graphite illustration on paper, done in the Realist style of Emil Carlsen (Danish-American, 1853-1952). A handwritten inscription at lower right corner reads, "Emil Carlsen '21". This framed piece measures approximately 24.25" x 18.75", with an approximate image sight of 16" x 10".

Image depicts a small arrangement of familiar objects; a glass bottle, a smooth ceramic bowl, and a glossy pair of apples. There is such a textural quality and a range of value within this image that one senses more color and life than is actually there. Of course, this a true testament to the mastery employed by the artist at work. This piece would make a fine addition to any collection.

Reverse side of piece features an affixed label bearing the name/information of a California-based fine art framer.

Emil Carlsen (Danish-American, 1853-1932) was an Impressionist painter who was raised in Copenhagen, where he studied architecture at the Danish Royal Academy. Carlsen emigrated from Denmark to America in 1872. It was not until the early 1880s that Emil Carlsen truly began to make a name for himself as a painter of still lives. He worked out of studios in Chicago and New York before turning to teaching as a stable profession that would sustain the artist and his family. Carlsen taught in San Francisco and Philadelphia until he was financially secure enough to return to the major love of his life: painting.
