Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas, done in the style of Seymour Joseph Guy (British-American, 1824-1910). A hand-painted inscription at lower right reads, "S. Guy. NA." This framed piece measures approximately 22" x 19" overall, with an approximate image sight of 16" x 13".
This charming image of a small child is almost photographic in nature, full of detail and lifelike value. A clear representation of the subject, but also of the artistic prowess of the painter at work. This work would have been typical of some of Guy's earliest creations; later, he would devote his energy to his highly-marketable "genre" paintings.
Seymour Joseph Guy (British-American, 1824-1910) received formal artistic training with Ambrosini Jerome (British-Italian, 1810-1883). Guy was an accomplished portraitist with a masterful understanding of light and the human form. He and his wife, Anna Maria Barber Guy, would eventually parent nine children, which provided Seymour Joseph Guy with a wealth of artistic inspiration. Pieces like "Temptation", "The New Story", and "Knowledge is Power" reflect a rich and idyllic domestic life.
