Bob Kane (American, 1915-1998) studied art at Cooper Union in New York City before joining the ranks of the Max Fleischer Studio in the early 1930s as a "trainee animator". Kane then entered the field of comic book illustration, where his pencil and ink work soon gained attention. It was in early 1939 that Bob Kane conceived "the Bat-Man" for DC Comics, after the runaway success of Superman. In the 1990s, after an illustrious and defining career, Kane was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame. He was also given the posthumous honors of his work being housed in the collections of museums such as MoMA and the Whitney, and his name being sealed forever in a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Kane's far-reaching creative contributions are now a huge part of American history.
