Description
This lot consists of a gouache illustration on paper, done in the expressive, abstract art style of Willem de Kooning (Dutch-American, 1904-1997). An image of slashing lines and splashes of vibrant color. Done in the abstract expressionist style for which de Kooning is so well known. A handwritten inscription at lower left reads, "de Kooning", and is further accompanied by a handwritten note en verso which reads, "to Jack. East Hampton. 1959." This piece would be a fine addition to any collection. Unframed measurements approximately 12" x 9".
Willem de Kooning (Dutch-American, 1904-1997) was a well respected artist who helped form the Abstract Expressionist movement. His gestural works - which were loosely based on figures, landscapes, and still lifes - helped establish a distinctly American style of painting in the early years of Abstract Expressionism. Perhaps De Kooning's most famous series were his paintings entitled "Woman", which were partially inspired by Pablo Picasso's work. They featured a wholly original approach to deconstructing the female figure. "I don't paint with ideas of art in mind. I see something that excites me. It becomes my content," said de Kooning.
