Description
Artist: CARLOS MERIDA - ( 1891 - 1985 ) Guatemala City.
Type: Watercolor on hand made paper
Signed: Yes, signed and dated 1968
Dimension: Framed: 21 3/4" x 30" Sheet: 15 1/4" x 23"
This is a magnificent geometric abstract watercolor work by master, Carlos Merida and done in 1968. It is exquisitely framed and we have never viewed outside of the frame. The frame is a shadow box type expensive framing.. This is a great opportunity to invest in this artist work.
The colors are simply gorgeous. This is iconic Merida with the linear geometric lines.. very special. You can see wrinkles and some unevenness with the paper, yet much is due to the hand made nature of the paper he uses.
Merida is considered a legend in some parts of the world, specifically Mexico and Guatemala. Born in Guatemala, yet spending most of career in Mexico. Merida first established a reputation as a figurative painter beginning in 1907, but in 1927, he abandoned that approach to become one of the pioneering non-figurative, geometric abstract artists in Mexico. In the 1920's, he also went thru a surrealist phase. He also did artwork with geometric symbolism linked to the Mayan culture.
From 1908 to 1914, he was in Europe, including four years in Paris, starting 1910 where he associated with avant-garde artists including Pablo Picasso and Amadeo Modigliani. He collected privately and publicly world wide.
