Description
Massachusetts Bay Council appoints a Justice of the Peace. Partly printed DS, 1p, 9½"x15½", Watertown, MA, Sep 6, 1775. Large paper seal at upper left. Headed "George the Third...," the Council appoints "...our Truly and well-beloved Benjamin Hall Esq. to be one of Our Justices to keep Our Peace in our County of Middlesex within our Province of the Massachusetts Bay..". Boldly signed by the ardent patriot Perez Morton (1751-1837). Signed also along the left margin by members of the Council, including James Otis (1725-1783) who wrote “The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved” (1764); Revolutionary War General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810); Harvard Professor and scientist John Winthrop, (1714-1779) as "J Winthrop"; Caleb Cushing; Benjamin Greenleaf; Samuel Holten (1738-1816), who later represented MA in the Continental Congress; Moses Gill (1734-1800), active in MA politics after the war; and others. The document is boldly signed and darkly engrossed. Archival fold repairs on verso, light scattered foxing; else VG. Nice example.
