Massachusetts Bay 1780 Appointment as Sergeant
Manuscript Document Signed, “David Cushing Colo.”, 1p, 8” x 12”, Hingham, July 22, 1780. Not examined out of protective mylar housing. Vertical and horizontal folds; scattered foxing; some discoloration and soiling; tears and paper loss, which have been professionally repaired; else document is in very good condition.
Colonel Cushing's appointment reads, in full, with original spelling unchanged, “David Cushing Esqr. / Commander of the 2d. Regiment of Militia appointed in Suffolk County in the State of Massachusetts Bay in order to hold themselves in Compleat readiness to oppose our Enemy should they attack this or the Neigbouring States / To Abel Whiton Greeting / By Virtue of the Power vested in me confiding your Loyalty Courage and Good Conduct I do hereby Constitute and appoint you to the office of 2d. Sargeant in Capt. Jabez Wilders Companey in the Regiment under my Command and you are acordingly impowered and required to act in said office agreeable to the Rules of Military Discipline and to obey all orders you may receive from time to time from your Superior officers.”
David Cushing (1727-1800) was born in Hingham, Massachusetts. A prominent man in town affairs, he was selectman in 1768-1770, and again in 1775-1776. Cushing was a Colonel in the Second Suffolk Regiment, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
