Description
Historically important three piece porridge set with flower, leaf and butterfly decoration done by Annie Knowlton in 1882. Done in Rookwood’s Dull Finish glaze, each piece is both incised and painted by Miss Knowlton, a descendent of Ephraim Knowlton, an early settler who built a store in the 1830’s at the confluence of Hamilton Avenue, Spring Grove and very near the Mill Creek, an area that to this day is known as Knowlton’s Corner. Annie Knowlton was not a member of the Pottery Club but may have met Maria Longworth Nichols at Frederick Dallas’ Hamilton Road Pottery. In any case the bowl and the pitcher are incised A.K. on the side and each piece is marked Rookwood in block letters along with the date and W for white clay. Although not marked as such, the set comprises shape 87 which curiously enough had to be ...“changed Dec. 1882 on acc’t of Haviland Patent,” as noted in the Shape Record Book. There is some crazing and a thumb nail chip to the underside rim of the dish. Purchased from the Knowlton family in 1889 by Cincinnati Art Galleries and sold to the consignor.
