Description
Jack Kerouac's Wall Art, Reflecting his Interest in Art History

A small assortment of colorful book plates and magazine cut-outs, five pieces, used by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) to decorate his living space. The famous American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957) is often called a nomad, but his personal possessions demonstrate the degree to which Kerouac was also a homebody. Kerouac's curation of images suggests he favored Impressionist and Modern artists. Scattered stains and surface abrasions from old tape. Isolated loss to a few edges. Else in very good to near fine condition. Average size 5" x 7". A representative piece in this lot is stamped with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp.

1. After Vincent Van Gogh, "Portrait of Père Tanguy" (1887)

2. After Paul Gauguin, "Nafea (When Will You Be Married?)" (1892)

3. After Paul Klee, "With the Eagle" (1918)

4. After detail of Diego Rivera's Mural at the National Palace of Mexico City (1935)

5. After Raoul Dufy, "Untitled Depicting Birds in Cage" (1939)

Jack Kerouac was extremely well-read and had many interests, including art history. Some titles in Kerouac's personal library include: Aldous Huxley, "On Art and Artists" (1960); Sam Hunter, "Modern French Painting" (1956); and John A. Kouwenhoven, "Made in America: The Arts in Modern Civilization."
