Wood Chipped from the "Washington Sentry" Chestnut Tree
American Revolutionary War Era Relic, Piece of Wood Chipped from the "Washington Sentry" Chestnut Tree, Very Fine.
This Revolutionary War Era relic souvenir is a 1" x. .5" piece of wood chipped the Washington Sentry Chestnut Tree, with a small ring attachment, attributed to be from Washington's Headquarters in Strafford, PA. It is know that after the defeat at the battle of Brandywine, General George Washington's Continental Army retreated toward Philadelphia, crossed the Schuylkill River and then camped at Strafford, Pennsylvania creating a Sentry platform built in this huge Chestnut tree so as to observe the British enemy troop movements. The trunk section of the huge "Sentinel" tree as it became known, was saved from destruction in the 1930s and moved to the Valley Forge Barr Museum. Some pieces were of the tree were chipped off and made into these souvenir sections, being sent to other museums for sale. A copy image of an original picture of trunk and brief history about Sentry tree are included. (2 items).
