Orphaned at age 11, he once supported himself as a sheep herder, worked in South African gold mines, then as a student in Ireland's University of Dublin, ditched higher education to be a courier for Sinn Fein's Michael Collins and eventually wound up with a British bounty on his head. He turned to acting as a decoy to escape detection and finally in 1925 found Hollywood perhaps safer and more palatable after fleeing to the US.
