Description
Ca. 1900, 197 x 119 cm, West Persia, Hamadan region
In the midnight blue field, a large ivory central medallion with attached pendants extends as far as the lateral borders. It is surrounded by boldly drawn flowering stems. Each of the sand-coloured spandrels contains a red vase aligned diagonally to the field which holds flowering stems. The two wide red leaves of an arabesque growing from each of the vases separate the spandrels and the field. The composition and style of drawing are characteristic of the Malayer carpets finely knotted in a single-weft structure in the south of the Hamadan region. The rare main border of this antique example is particularly striking. Large birds and rosettes have been incorporated into a vine of flowering stems. – Cut sides, replaced cords, both ends slightly reduced. Otherwise well preserved, with a high velvety pile.
