Description
Attributed to Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973), ink on paper work, signed, dated, and inscribed May 6, 1935. In this note with sketch, Picasso is almost certainly making a character costume suggestion to his friend and director of the Paris Opera, Serge Lifar. Serge Lifar was a French ballet dancer and choreographer of Ukrainian origin, famous as one of the greatest male ballet dancers of the 20th century. Not only a dancer, Lifar was also a choreographer, director, writer, dance theoretician and art collector. The piece is housed in a European mid-century frame and bears a European Christie's Auction House label on the reverse. Provenance: Private European Collection; Taylor Robinson Dublin, Ohio; private collection, East Hampton, NY; collection of a California gentleman. [Art: 6 x 9 inches; Frame: 8 x 11 1/4 inches].
