LeRoy Robert Paige, best known as Satchel Paige started playing baseball at the age of 19. He was offered $250 a month to play for the Chattanooga White Sox, a Negro Southern League. From there, he played everywhere in the Negro leagues and on his 42nd birthday, signed his first big league contract with the Cleveland Indians. Two days later, Paige became the oldest rookie to make his major league debut. Paige was also the first Negro player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.
