Iroquois beaded match holder late 19th C

A colorful, heavily beaded match holder from the late Victorian age.

Both the green-blue cloth back and the red cloth pocket are decorated with heavily beaded designs. The green-blue cloth has a design of a flower in clear beads with green bead stamens, a light blue stem, and a circle of red beads at the base of the flower. The flower is built up with layers of beads to make a 3D effect. The design on the red pocket is a bird perched on a flowering branch. There are blue and yellow beads on the branch. The bird is again built up with clear beads. Both the pocket and the back are edged in heavy clear beads; they just glitter in the light.

There is an oilskin backing to the cloth, which has been stitched around the edge with a cotton thread. The thread ends have been glued to the back by a clear glue or coating of some sort.

There is a bead loop at one top edge of the red pocket. The top of the match holder has a loop that, for some reason has been sewn down.

The match holder has no marks or tags.

MEASUREMENTS

7 3/8” tall x 4 ½Â” wide. Weighs 2.9 oz

CONDITION

There are some beads that are loose and show threads, and some beads are missing. One edge corner of the pocket has a small area of cloth loss and shows the oilskin backing. The cloth is still a dark green and red. There is also some loss to the cloth and beads at the base of the red pocket.

A connection to the past with all of the Iroquois handwork. A beautiful piece to again be hung on a wall as a work of art.
