Description
1865 Sherman Campaigns Civil War Memoris Tactics Army Illustrated MAPS Bowman

“It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.”

― William T. Sherman

William Tecumseh Sherman was 19th-century American military officer, known for his service as a Union Army general during the Civil War. In 1875, seeking to stay out of politics, Sherman published his ‘Memoirs’, which would become one of the best-known, first-hand accounts of the American Civil War. This important autobiography includes summaries of political stances on slavery, encouraging slaves to try to escape, even though he did not want their help in the military. His military philosophy was clear, as quoted in ‘Memoirs’:

“My aim then was the whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us.”

This rare first edition book, collected by Bowman, covers Sherman’s military exploits and endeavors, and is finely illustrated with battlefield maps and portrait engravings. According to Nevins,

“A defense and vindication of Sherman against those (notably Stanton) who criticized his truce agreement with J.E. Johnston in 1865.”
