Description
W EUGENE SMITH From my Window, Cathedral, New York, 1958, Gelatin Silver Print 16.75x13.6" ASG# WES/1667 from the series As from My Window I Sometimes Glance, 1957-1958 printed later. Circular Estate Stamp verso.
W. Eugene Smith loved dark tones in his photographs and would push the chemistry to achieve the mood and atmosphere he desired on the print. In this series Smith took pictures from his loft in New York. Here he has created the rising specter of the church steeple framed by his window, the opposite of the William Clift Reflection St. Louis County Courthouse, the previous lot.
Provenance: From the collection of Juanita Smith, daughter of W. Eugene Smith. Between 1988-1994 Andrew Smith Gallery as agent for Smiths three daughters Juanita, Shana and Marissa sold 2000 prints from Smith estate that they had inherited.
W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) one of America's most acclaimed photojournalists for more than three decades produced some of the most powerful and humanistic work of this century. He advocated the photographer's right to complete control over the editorial layout of images, captions, and text for publication and exhibition, and he was uncompromising concerning craftsmanship and the social responsibilities of the photographer.
