John K. Hillers (1843-1925) was the official photographer for the US Geological Powell Survey through the Grand Canyon and Southwest from 1871-1879 when John Wesley Powell became the head of the Bureau of American Ethnology and Hillers became their official photographer. One remarkable series he made was of architectural views taken among the Native American Tribes of the Southwest. Made on a trip to the Southwest Hillers took with Frank Hamilton Cushing and James Stevenson, Hillers' magnificent photographs capture the organic relationship between the ancient Indian communities and the desert landscape. These five prints of Taos Pueblo, Santa Clara Pueblo, San Felipe Pueblo, Santo Domingo Pueblo and Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico are smaller reduction copy prints made by Hillers at the BAE.
