Barrow challenges us to find the "beauty" in this Southern California desert landscape or perhaps rethink and negate the idea of beauty the X creates four viewing planes.

Thomas Barrow (1938- ) worked with numerous experimental processes that pried the photograph away as an automatic witness. In his most famous Cancellation series (1974-1978), Barrow slashed an "X" onto the negative to point out that regardless of how much empirical data is knowable, reality remains a makeshift combination of belief, ignorance, and knowledge. For Barrow photographic data is a jumping-off spot, as the immaculate print is discarded in the conviction that artistic response lies beyond the pictorial vision of the lens. Credit Luminous Lint.
