Description
AUDUBON, John James (1785 - 1851).Swamp Hare, Plate XXXVII (37).Lithograph with original hand color From Viviparious Quadrupeds of North America.New York: 1845-1848.21 3/4" x 27 3/4" sheet.Comparable: Neal Auction Company, 2011 - $2,074; Arader Galleries, 2015 - $1,952."As it suddenly leaps or bounds from its hiding i)lace ere it is seen, it is apt to startle the rambler who has intruded upon its solitary retreat, and he may be impressed with the belief that he has started a young deer. When chased by dogs, the Swamp-hare runs with great swiftness, and is able to escape from them without difficulty ; but it almost invariably directs its flight towards the nearest pond, as if led by instinct to seek an element in which all traces of its scent are soon lost to its eager pursuers" (John James Audubon, Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America).
