c. 1870. Heavy-weight. Bars and squared work to form this quilt constructed primarily of wool and homespun blankets. One square is linsey Woolsey. Red wood squares and small wool shards make up a center red cross which includes naive embroidered letters. The red center medallion could possibly be symbolic of the crossroads code as found in Underground Railroad quilts or the red squares could be an indication of the protective Mojo charm found in many early African American quilts. Good condition.
