Giovanni Battista Piranesi , Italian (1720-1778). Circa 1760 etching on woven paper of Veduta dell Arco di Tito (The Arch of Titus) from Piranesi series Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome). Focillon 209, Taschen 200. Letter C located to top left of far right building. Plate measures 15 15/16 inches (h) × 24 5/16 inches (w). Framed under mat and glass in wood frame. Outside of frame approximately 24 inches (h) by 34.5 inches (w). Another of the same Veduta dell Arco di Tito etching by Piranesi is at the Met Museum in New York (Accession Number: 64.521.4).In 1756, the Roman Antiquities consisting of 135 etchings was published by Piranesi which made him famous around Europe. Some claim that the detailed etchings in the Views of Rome by Giovanni are the best pictorial biographies ever done of Rome. Giovanni Battista Piranesi is quoted as saying …Rest is unworthy of a Roman citizen… when referencing his tireless work using tools and copperplates to create his Views of Rome.
Condition
Viewed via naked eye and under UV light. Good overall studio condition. Some small discoloration spots noted on various areas of etching. Crease from fold can be seen if looked at closely running parallel down center. For age of piece, very well preserved.
