Description
Spanish Colonial, Mexico or possibly Spain, ca. early 16th to early 18th century CE. An iron dog collar known as a carlanca ("wolf collar") used by canines during the early periods of Spanish Colonialism. Multiple iron bars are attached with looped terminals and have large barbs protruding out from their peripheries. Carlancas were used in post-Conquest periods by farmers and ranchers on their dogs to protect their necks from wolf bites and deter future wolf attacks. Size: 6.75" W (17.1 cm)
