North America, probably Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. mid-19th century CE. A fine Spanish percussion rifle with a finely grained hardwood stock. The octagonal barrel has a pair of sights along the top as well as interior rifling grooves and rests within the shallow forestock above a slender ram rod. The steel lock plate features a percussion firing mechanism with a sturdy, spring-driven hammer and a narrow trigger housed within an ornate guard. The backstock exhibits an integral chin rest as well as densely incised latticework patterns on the handle for increased grip. Two inlays of 85% gold (equivalent to 20K+) atop the barrel include a maker's mark reading "J&M" and a petite crucifix. Minor abrasions to barrel, lock plate, forestock, and backstock, with light softening to some incised details on handle, one stable fissure to forestock beneath trigger guard, and minor wear to gold inlays, otherwise intact and excellent. Nice patina throughout. Hammer falls when trigger is pulled, however rifle has not been tested for firing functionality.
