Description
Native American, Southwestern USA, Apache people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautifully preserved example of a woven burden basket, its surface decorated with leather strips that are a popular feature of Apache burden baskets and that jingle with any movement. A contrasting dark and light geometric pattern is woven into bands around the body. This is a functional item, with the dangling leather strips made to frighten away any snakes as one carries the basket through the desert landscape, used to gather items. Size (does not include fringe): 12.4" W x 12.25" H (31.5 cm x 31.1 cm)
