Ylla, born Camilla Koffler, was a Hungarian photographer best known for her animal photographs. Born in Vienna, she and her parents were Hungarian Nationals. Ylla spent a portion of her youth at a boarding school in Budapest following the end of World War I. Originally trained as a sculptor, studying at both the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade and Academie Colarossi in Paris, she found a love for photography while working as an assistant to photographer Ergy Landau in the early 1930s. Landau would later help arrange Ylla's first photography exhibition and encouraged her to open her own animal portrait studio. It was also Landau who introduced Ylla to the Rapho Agency, which took her work international.
Ylla's work was included in the first photography show held Lourve (1936), and at an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1937. At the beginning of World War II, with the help of MoMA, Ylla was able to secure an entry visa to the United States, where she opened a studio in New York. Her work has been used to illustrate magazines, books and other publication around the world.
