Important Alabaster Vase Depicting Cauac Sky
This important Alabaster Vase details the transition of Kingship during the Mayan Classic period.
An old King is portrayed passing the Scepter of Power to a younger new King. The kingship of the Mayan City State of Quiriguá was presented to their rulers by the kings of Copán. This Vassal Kingship was represented by a Royal Scepter known as a Manakin.
In 724 AD ’18-Rabbit’, the King of Copan, presented 'Cauac Sky' the Manakin of rulership over Quiriguá. On May 3, 738 Cauac Sky defeated, captured, and then sacrificed 18-Rabbit in the Great Plaza at Quiriguá.
This vase portrays Cauac Sky passing the Royal Manakin to a younger image of himself, as the Corn God. This shows that not only was Quiriguá no longer was ruled by Copán, but also that the power had originaly come from Cauac Sky himself.
