Description
**First Time At Auction**
Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved steatite amulet in the shape of a crescent with tapered termini that nearly touch. The front of each terminal is graced with a low relief lotus flower and stem, with blossoms that curve towards a royal uraeus cobra in a reared pose in front of a large sun disc. Amulets like this example were placed on the mummified body of the deceased as protective charms for their arduous journey through the afterlife. Size: 1" W x 0.9" H (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA; ex-private Mr. M. Whitney collection, acquired February 15, 1998
