Description
**First Time At Auction**
Classical World, Greco-Roman, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Skillfully cast by the cire perdue (lost wax) process, a bronze bust depicting Mars (Ares), god of warfare as well as an agricultural guardian, donning a characteristically plumed neo-Attic helmet decorated with dots (perhaps to represent stars) and crescents upon his clean-shaven handsome face with round eyes that probably once held inlays. The underside of the chest is hollow suggesting that this piece may have served as a luxurious ornament for a chest or chariot. Size: 1" W x 1.85" H (2.5 cm x 4.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities; ex The Sumer Collection, Henry Anavian, March 12, 2007
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

Condition
Intact, with some light wear commensurate with age. Really nice preservation of detail, especially on the hat, and rich, smooth patina.
