Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Lambayeque Valley, Sican-Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1375 CE. A fabulous blackware stirrup vessel with two slender, conical spouts - one on either side of the globular body - and a conical foot. An elaborately decorated warrior or lord figure wearing a sits atop the center of the stirrup, a low-relief circular nodule adorns the top of the orb-shaped body, and claw-like ornaments emerge from beneath the spouts, perhaps suggesting the presence of Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. Size: 10.25" W span from tips of spouts x 10.5" H (26 cm x 26.7 cm)
Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.

Condition
Spouts repaired from a about 3 to 6 pieces. Chips to ends of spouts and base as shown. Expected surface wear commensurate with age. Probably produced a whistling sound at one point, but sediment within is preventing this today. Nice burnishing marks.
