Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely vessel for holding quantities of crushed lime powder, formed from the body of a hollowed gourd of a petite size. The vessel sits with a slight lean and has a round but stable base, bulging walls, and registers of repeating ovoid, circular, and zigzagging motifs on the shoulders and rim. The top two rows of geometric motifs are further accentuated with white earthen pigment to bring out the carved details, and smooth patina covers the entire composition. Size: 3.125" W x 2.4" H (7.9 cm x 6.1 cm)

Condition
Minor abrasions to base, body, and rim, with fading and wear to original white earthen pigment, and light softening to some incised details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within body, and nice traces of original white pigment around shoulder.
