Description
Sotheby's TLTested: Tang Dynasty Horse and Foreign Rider with small Dog to back in buff pottery with traces of color. Approximate height 16 inches (40.6 cm.). Sold Sotheby's New York, March 22, 2001, Lot 76, one of a Set of three painted pottery "foreign" Equestrians each with a pet on the hind quarters of the horse (similar to another set from a Tang tomb in Xian exhibited The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology Washington DC 1999-2000). The Sotheby's catalogue has the following statement about the thermoluminescence test for this figure: The dating of this lot is consistent with one of three test results from the original lot of three: Oxford Authentication Ltd, one of numbers: C100y8, C100y9 or C200a19.
Condition
Various drill holes to details in inconspicuous areas from the Oxford Authentication TLTesting. Head and arms of Rider restuck, parts of Dog, Horse ears, tail, each leg and base broken and restuck.
