Description
Oil on canvas 40 x 20 in. Tea Sternklar (1905-1997)She is recognized as an artist of international level. Her paintings have been viewed by thousands in exhibits throughout the country. Sternklar was born in Poland, but listed most of her young life in Italy (where she spent 14 years) and then Israel (15 years). Upon moving to the United States, she lived in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Before retiring in 1977, she was a bookkeeper for an art supply distributor in New York City, where she worked for 15 years. During this time she taught herself how to paint and exhibited her work was exhibited in Greenwich Village (at least 10 years) and the White House. During the Kennedy administration, one of her works depicting President Kennedy with daughter Caroline was gratefully accepted by the White House and is now part of the Kennedy legacy. She lived the last years of her life in New Jersey.She won several awards from the Salmagundi Scholarship Fund. She was also featured in a number of articles in the Long Island Herald, the Village Voice, among others. She also judged many local art competitions. In addition, she offered her services to help restore art work with historical value.Her son, Avraham Sternklar is a noted concert pianist and composer whose compositions are published, recorded and performed by soloists and ensembles on an international level in such remote places as Japan and Peru . As a child, he was able to study under Leo Kestenberg due to the barter arrangement Tea set up with the famous pianist to act as his family tailor, since they did not have the money for lessons. He composed 10 piano pieces entitled "A Promise Fulfilled" representing the many faces and moods of Israel. The compositions are based on 10 paintings by Tea. This was a unique collaboration between mother and son and Art and Music. Mr. Sternklar often performs this work while exhibiting the paintings and discussing the magnificent scenes they represent. The pieces have been performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and were the subject of a half hour special on cable television. Recently a performance was held outdoor at Heckscher Park in Huntington, New York, during which a modern dance company danced to this set of pieces as the paintings were displayed on a giant screen.Information provided by Lisette Ruch whose main source is the artist's son of Wayne, New Jersey.
