Description
Oil on canvas 24 x 28 in., 27 1/2 x 21 1/2 in. (framed).Frederick Perl was born in Germany March 6, 1890 and died in Santa Barbara, CA March 5 1963.He earned a Masters degree in architecture at the progressive Art School in Dusseldorf, Germany. His painting was influenced by the Blue Four (Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Alexei von Jawlensky and Vasily Kandinsky) and other German Expressionists.Perl left Germany for Holland in 1938 and later moved to Rio de Janeiro. He arrived in New York in 1942 and began painting while in New York.He worked as Chief Designer for the architectural firm "Design for Business" and later opened his own Fifth Avenue office where he did commercial and interior design. He was one of the leading designers of his time. In 1957 he closed his office and returned to Europe where he devoted his life to painting. He lived in the Canary Islands, Spain, France and Switzerland. He spent two years in the mountain retreat of Lugano, Switzerland where he took up abstract painting. In 1960, Perl and his wife Ursula moved to Santa Barbara, California where he spent the remaining years of his life creating the non-objective paintings for which he is best known.. He had posthumous shows at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art March 1964 and Long Beach Museum of Art in Oct 1964."Perl's artistry blends passion and intellect. Although his paintings relate to the work of The Blue Four, so influential in modern German painting, this artist's inventions were very much his own. They represent the creative efforts of Perl's last two years of life spent in Santa Barbara from 1961 to 1963. That they follow a lifetime spent in architecture is evident by their structural emphasis, yet they are remarkably free in rhythm and color."Henry J. SeldisArt EditorLos Angeles TimesFrom a review of Long Beach Museum of Art show."The pioneer abstract artist, Frederick M. Perl, painted strong, colorful non-objective works, combining lyrical tones within powerful structures. At times his forms are organic; at times they verge upon the geometric. Always his works carry an intense emotional charge."Thomas W. LeavittFormer DirectorSanta Barbara Museum of ArtSubmitted by Ralph Blunt
