Description
Jack Kerouac's Personally Owned & Used Hong Kong Export Abacus, Estate-Certified
An abacus personally owned and used by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous mid-century American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957). Provenance: The lot will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.
This example of a Chinese "suanpan" or "calculating tray" was made in Hong Kong, ca. 1890-1930. The ebonized mahogany frame was fitted with elegant brass corner brackets and plates. 13 rods intersect two decks with a ratio of 2:5 oval-shaped counting beads. A printed paper label reading "Made in Hong Kong" is located on a wooden brace in between the fourth and fifth rod. Expected surface wear consistent with age, else very good to near fine. 14.625" x 7" x 1".
This abacus is a testament to Jack Kerouac's passionate interest in all things Asian. Kerouac was inspired by many aspects of Asian culture, spirituality, and religion, including Buddhism, mysticism, yoga, and haiku poetry.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
