Description
Ca. 18th Century. Cambodia. A fine quality antique sandstone linga, lingum or lingam triptych with Yoni. A a symbol of fertility and energy it is an abstract or aniconic representation of the Hindu deity, Shiva. The linga is as a symbol of the energy and potential of God, Shiva himself. Within the Khmer empire Shiva was frequently represented in art by a linga placed in a yoni-shaped base. The three Linga in this triptych are each carved from single pieces of stone symbolizing the union of the three divinities of the Hindu trinity: Brahma, the Creator (the cubic base); Vishnu, the Preserver (the octagonal section) and Shiva, the supreme God (the abstracted phallus at the top). Engraved lines indicate the head and the glans. Provenance: Private Singapore Collection.
