Jefferson, Thomas. NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA. London: John Stockdale, 1787. 8.25" x 4.75". [4], 382 pp., plus one folding chart; lacks folding map. Bound in recent full black leather with spine ruled and lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed. ********************** FIRST LONDON EDITION. Includes full-page woodcut of "Madison's cave" on leaf C8v, printed tables in the text, and a large folding table of Indian Tribes. Generally considered the first published edition in English, following a privately printed 1785 edition and a 1786 French edition. Howes J78; Sabin 35896.

Condition

Title toned and with margins chipped (large chip along top margin.) Final leaf with edge-toning and some light marginal chipping. Generally clean contents but with some light and faded water-staining in places throughout, and a few instances of various other stains. Leaves C1 and N3 with 1" closed tears to margins (repaired with old paper.)
