Civil War Era Wade & Butcher Officer Shaving Stand
Civil War Era Wade & Butcher Officer Shaving Stand
Item Details
Description
Antique Civil War Wade & Butcher straight razor shaving stand. This item belonged to Lieutenant Kinne MD. Purchased from the family's estate, this outstanding shaving stand is in very good to excellent condition. There is surface wear to the ornate mahogany, areas of scuffing and two splits in the wooden mirror frame, as shown. According to the handwritten note which came with the piece, and provided by the family, the shaving stand was the property of Lieutenant Theodore Young Kinne, M.D., a surgeon and member of the 97th New York Regiment. It accompanied him during the siege of Richmond in 1864, making it an authentic Civil War era artifact and a decorative treasure. The note was written by Dr. Kinne's grandson. In addition to the tilting mirror, this ornate stand features two hinged boxes on a white marble slab and a drawer for storage below. Found within is a 7 day straight razor set by Wade & Butcher of Sheffield, England in its original box. There is surface wear and a missing edge to the box, and it does not snap shut. Each razor is stamped on its spine with the day of the week with the exception of one, a replacement for "Thursday." The blades are in very good condition for their age, with minimal surface wear, areas of oxidation and tarnish. The genuine horn handles are intact except for chipping loss and a hairline crack (secured with adhesive tape) to the replacement blade and chipping loss to the "Friday" handle. Also included are 3 brass buckles that were originally part of a leather strop, most likely used by the Lieutenant. The stand is approximately 70"H x 18"W x 13"D.
