Description
This lot consists of an ink and watercolor composition on paper, done in the surrealist style of Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989). This rich image depicts a dreamscape punctuated by a huge, winged eye, a colossal candle, and an impossibly long-legged elephant. A haunting, enigmatic, and cool-toned composition. Unframed, this piece measures approximately 14" x 11.75".
Reverse side features a number of stamps and additional features. The uppermost stamp, at top right, bears the name and information of Christie’s. Below, additional stamps read “Certificacion” and “Esta obra es certificada y de coleccion” [“This work is certified and of collection”]. The last stamp, at lower left, reads “Direccion de Bibliotecas. Archivos y Museos. Santiago Chile. Autorizado.” This translates to, “Library Directorate. Archives and Museums. Santiago, Chile. Authorized.”
Salvador Dali was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. From an early age, Dali was encouraged to practice his art and would eventually go on to study at an academy in Madrid. In the 1920s, Dali went to Paris and began to associate with the likes of Picasso, Magritte, and Miro. This critical juncture would give way to the birth of Dali's first Surrealist phase. However, with the rise of fascist leader Francisco Franco in Spain, Dali's was eventually forced to leave the Surrealist movement, and he continued to create on his own terms for the duration of his life. Dali was an imaginative, visionary force of the 20th century, defining surrealist and modern art for generations to come.
