Description
Green patina abstract sculpture. Herbert Kallem, sculptor and teacher, was born 1909 in Philadelphia. Later he lived in New York City, East Hampton, NY, and Monhegan Island, Maine, where he was an important member of the Post World War II New York artists who summered at the artist colony there. His father, Morris Kallem, was a portrait painter, and his brother, Henry Kallem, was also a noted artist of his time.  Herbert Kallem studied at the National Academy of Design, The Pratt Institute, and The Hans Hoffman School of Fine Art. He was President of The Sculptors Guild from 1974-76, and a member of The American Abstract Artists, The Audubon Society, and The American Federation of Arts. Kallem shared a studio on 28th Street in NYC with artist and actor, Zero Mostel, where a group of artists calling themselves “The 28th Street Gang” focused their New York community. Herbert Kallem had exhibitions at The Whitney Museum Of American Art and The Carnegie Institute, and with The American Abstract Artists Group in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Rome, Tokyo and Copenhagen. He was head of the Foundation Day and Evening Sculpture Department at New York University and at The School of Visual Arts in NYC for many years.  His work is in the collections of The Whitney Museum; The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, Hartford, CT; The Loeb Collection, New York University; The Smithsonian Institution; The Newark, NJ Museum; The Hofstra University Museum Sculpture Garden; and The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, Lincoln, Nebraska, among others. [19 x 3 x 5 inches].
