Item Details
Description
Framed, blueback, early 19th century chart of the east and west coast of South America from The River Plate to Valparaiso, including the Falkland Islands with plans of the principal harbours. This piece was used by Captain Wilson of the steamship Sierra Nevada during a passage from New York to San Francisco via Rio Janeiro (spelled as such and as noted on back). Captain Wilson made detailed pencil markings of his early 1853 voyage directly onto the chart. Times and dates of specific legs are noted and visibly legible. Chart was published by J.W. Norie (1772 - 1843) & Co. of Leadenhall St., London for the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy in 1822. Very detailed with many cross sections of various ports and bays including Berkeley Sound, Port St. Carlos etc... Also shows the Strait of Magellan, Patagonia, Cape Horn, Christmas Sound, Terra Del Fuego and Buenos Aires. The country of Chile is spelled "Chili". Falkland Islands are very detailed. Framed in burlwood. 52" high x 40 1/2" wide. *John William Norie was a chartographer who wrote several nautical books including The Epitome of Practical Navigation (1805) which became the standard work on navigation. This chart was published when Norie had only been a company for 9 years. Norie eventually became Imray Publishers following his death.
