Description
A fantastic woven natural fiber mask with a glorious feather headdress. This is a very early style of mask from this region, and has been embellished with wooden planks as well as animal hide decorations and organic mineral pigments. Pende or related ethnic group, possibly the Luba. ( An old field photograph taken by Casimir Zagourski showing a very similar mask in use by an ethnic group noted as a Bakamputu in the Sankuru province ( near Pende territory though appears to be Luba peoples. ) The mask measures 31 x 29 inches and will also include a professional custom display stand. Provenance: Armand Arman ( Arman Fernandez) donated the mask to a charitable fund raiser for the Jennie Simpson Educational Collection of African Art / The Brooklyn Museum, New York,( 1970?) Acquired by noted African Art dealer Merton Simpson, New York. Sold to Amyas Naegele Gallery, New York. * A Note on Armand Arman : Born Arman Fernandez, Arman created an extraordinary collection of visually provocative objects from diverse regions of Africa. Known globally as renowned French painter and sculptor Armand Arman, an artist who came to prominence during the 1960s. The Arman collection is considered to be some of the highest quality African works of tribal art ever assembled.
