Description
1885 Illustrated History of England Napoleon Britain French Revolution Cassell
‘Cassell's Illustrated History of England’ is a comprehensive history of England from its earliest period to the Affair of Trent in 1861. The history includes notes on Julius Caesar, Napoleon, the French Revolution, battles, Castles, assassinations, Kings and Queens of England, and much more. Cassell utilized the popularity of pictorial histories with this particular work, gaining such popularity that it was in its 9th edition by 1905. Mario Carretero points out,
“Cassell’s Illustrated History concentrated on portraits, views of places and a few dramatic scenes, crude but expressive, including ‘Bread Riot,’ ‘Marie Antoinette in Prison,’ and ‘The Death of Nelson.’”
This particular edition of “Cassell's illustrated history of England” was the ‘toned paper’ edition which is a medium-hued paper that gives a mid-tone value in color, presumably to give more emphasis to the numerous illustrations throughout.
