**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A lovely wooden incense box comprised of several wooden slats that are secured with dozens of iron pins. The rectangular box has a bulky body, a wide rim, and a form-fitting lid, and the interior surfaces of both lid and body are lined with thin, hammered metal sheets. Boxes like this example were used for storing and transporting large quantities of incense as part of the wedding dowry for a local daimyo (provincial lord), and faint scents of the original incense can still be smelled within this vessel. Size: 11.375" L x 16.125" W x 11.1" H (28.9 cm x 41 cm x 28.2 cm)

Condition
Minor nicks and abrasions to exterior wooden panels and interior metal lining, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old sticker residue and old black ink on exterior of body.
