Description
ARTIST: ANSEL ADAMS
TITLE: 'Zabriskie Point, Death Valley, CA, 1942'
MEDIUM: Silver Gelatin
IMAGE SIZE: 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 in
DESCRIPTION: This silver gelatin contact print is trimmed and unmounted. Archivally hinged with Filmoplast onto an 8-ply Museum Board overmat that is hinged with a backing. Numbered "1.04" by an unknown hand in pencil verso. The Gallery has not located another print of this image.
This collection of 20 proof prints by Ansel Adams offers a rare glimpse into the working process of America's most notable photographer. Without stamps or signatures, these prints were likely intended for reference or reproduction, and not for display as finished "fine art" prints. The soft, warm tones of the paper on which these prints were made, along with the image dates and apparent lack of fluorescence, suggest they were printed around the 1940s, although this assumption isn't certain. The group can be traced back to a Private Collection, Texas; followed by the G Ray Hawkins Gallery, from whom the present owner acquired them in 2012. Many of these images were rarely, if ever, printed or published, with several images previously unknown to the Gallery.
