Description
A NAPOLEON III NEO-GREC GILT METAL CLOCK, "Allegory of Poetry," 1852-1870, the figure of the Greek muse Calliope is crouching and seated on an ancient diphros stool seat raised on cloven-footed goat legs, she is holding a shell harp, and one foot on a footrest, she sits atop a sarcophagus form centering a Roman numeral enameled dial encircled by a bead face, flaked by pierced scrolling trumpet flowers, the breakfront foot with relief tendril and berry motifs echoing ancient Roman styles, the clockwork, and pendulum marked, 1305, 3 and 9. Height: 13 3/4" Width: 12 1/2" Depth: 5 1/2" Note: The animative qualities of the seat and feet, combined with the undulating scrolls of the vines invite the viewer into a bit of fantasy and eloquence, a tribute to the essences that the muse embodies. Provenance: Lifelong Collection of Clocks and Antiques, Navasota, Texas.
