對於中國人來説，斯坦因 (Sir Aurel Stein)是個備受爭議的人物。這位原籍匈牙利的英國考古學家天生精力充沛、野心勃勃，語言天賦尤其過人。24嵗即被授予東方學院院长的職位，遠赴英屬印度考察。從1900到1931，斯坦因組織了四次探險，足跡遍佈絲路——先後發掘了和阗、尼雅、樓蘭。當然，還有舉世震驚的敦煌莫高窟。

1928年初版的這套《考古記》，完成于1913-16年第三輪探險之後。這一次他重访敦煌，带走大量文物，还发掘了西夏古城黑水，打开了“河边大塔”的塔腹和基座，整理出四千件佛经、雕塑和文書。本書不但記載了考察的詳情，還附有五十餘份考古地圖，以及五百餘張珍貴圖片——從千年不腐的樓蘭艷尸、色澤如新的西域壁畫、到黃沙大漠的風土人情，即使又一個世紀過去，展卷覽畢，震撼依舊銘心。
