Presentation copy from the author, with fifteen tipped-in original autographs of Confederate officers and generals. The ink inscription on the front free endpaper of Vol. I reads "Autographed for George Steele Seymour with much pleasure, Douglas Southall Freeman," below which is penciled date May, 1943, in another hand. With bookplates of Seymour on the front pastedowns, below which are those of Kenneth M. Smith. The autographs and signed letters within are inserted or tipped at the signers pictures or where they are mentioned in the text.
