Description:
Albumen photograph, captioned "Bear Coat" with number 1405 in the negative. Image size 15.5x10 cm (6¼x4"), on original card-stock mount, Hayne's pictorial Fargo D.T. imprint on verso.
Uncommon image of a prairie native, possibly a scout for the U.S. military, holding a pistol. F. Jay Haynes, among a small cadre of notable photographers on the western frontier, established his studio in Fargo, Dakota Territory, in 1879, moving to St. Paul, Minnesota, ten years later.
Condition
Image somewhat toned with some foxing; small hole at top edge for hanging, tape residue around edges on verso from earlier mounting; overall very good.
